Ear Surgery

Ear SurgeryCosmetic ear surgery, or Otoplasty, is an option for patients whose ears stick out excessively from their head, or who are unhappy with the size or shape of their ears. Otoplasty is performed on both adults and children to balance the appearance of the ears and face, and can result in dramatic improvements in confidence and self-esteem.

When Should Cosmetic Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) be Performed?

Otoplasty can make a dramatic difference in the lives of both adults and children. Our experience tells us children with protruding ears often experience teasing from their peers, so timing can be important. An otoplasty performed before school age can have tremendous social and psychological benefits. The child’s ears must be full-size before the otoplasty can be performed. This usually occurs by age 5 or 6. Adults unhappy with the size, angle, or shape of their ears can also benefit tremendously from improved appearance and self-esteem with the results of cosmetic ear surgery. Adult patients frequently elect for otoplasty in combination with other cosmetic facial procedures.

About The Otoplasty Procedure

Otoplasty is performed under local anesthesia, or in conjunction with other facial procedures. Otoplasty surgery begins with a well-hidden incision in the natural fold just behind the ear. Cartilage and skin may or may not be removed based on the shaping needs specific to each patient, and recovery takes about 1 week. A thorough consultation is available for all patients at our Evansville office.
