Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid SurgeryEyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a very popular option for those wanting refreshed, younger-looking eyes. The eyes can begin to show age in a number of ways: they begin to look old because of tell-tale bags forming underneath the eyes, or because of puffiness caused by drooping skin in the upper eyelids. In some cases, upper-eyelid drooping may even obstruct a patient's vision. There are several variations of blepharoplasty, in which upper or lower eyelids can both be treated. The procedure may be performed by itself, or in conjuction with other surgeries such as to give patients a refreshed look that instills a renewed self-confidence.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery is performed to remove fat, skin, or muscle. The tissue is removed through an inconspicuous incision made in the existing folds and creases on the eyelid, which minimizes the visibility of any scarring that might occur. The surgery reduces the appearance of puffiness and results in a more rested, alert appearance. In some cases, drooping skin may obstruct the client's vision, in which case blepharoplasty may be covered by insurance.

Sometimes the appearance of drooping upper eyelids is actually caused by drooping eyebrows. This condition can be corrected by a forehead lift.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery may be performed in a variety of ways, depending on how best to enhance the client's appearance. The existing fat in the lower eyelid can be either removed entirely or "repositioned," that is, used to reshape the eyelid and preserve the youthful fullness around the eyes. Depending on the variation of procedure, the incision can be made just below the eyelashes or internally, if there is a large amount of skin or muscle to remove.

Eyelid surgeries are frequently performed in conjuction with laser skin resurfacing or a deep phenol peel to complete a rejuvanated look.

Recovery

During the first few days after surgery there will be swelling in the eyelids, however, patients may recover in a week or less. In lower eyelid surgery where fat is repositioned, the recovery may take slightly longer. Bruising usually lasts for 7-10 days. You will meet with your doctor approximately one week after the surgery. During this visit any remaining sutures will be removed.
