Because of gravity and loss of volume in the skin, the face is usually the most noticeable area to show signs of aging. Not surprisingly, the facelift is seen as the most comprehensive solution to removing wrinkles and sagging skin, to restore a youthful and refreshed appearance.
Facelifts have evolved from merely tightening the skin to include many variations of procedures which can smooth, tighten, remove, or reposition the skin, muscle, or fatty tissue of the face. Your doctor can recommend which customized facelift option will provide you with the most revitalized, natural-looking results possible.
To achieve the most comprehensive results towards a youthful looking appearance, facelifts are often performed simultaneously with eyelid surgery (removing puffiness and bags around the eyes) or a brow lift.
The mini facelift is ideal for patients who do not show advanced signs of aging, but are bothered by sagging skin in the lower face, jawline and neck. Incisions are made inconspicously along the hairline or around the ear, and the skin with surrounding deep tissue is gently lifted. Though recovery includes some bruising and swelling, patients should be able to return to normal activity within 1-2 weeks.
The standard facelift is well-suited for patients with more advanced signs of aging, such as loose skin in the lower face, jaw line, and neck. The standard lift provides more long-lasting results by lifting the SMAS (muscular area of the face) layer of tissue, which is just beneath the skin. Incisions are made along the hairline down to the ear, through which the SMAS is gently lifted, re-shaping the skin for a refreshed appearance. Additionally, greater refinement of the neck can be achieved with this type of procedure. Patients should expect to return to normal activity after approximately 2 weeks.
The deep plane facelift tightens the face from beneath the muscle-fascia tissue layers and can improve well-advanced aging changes, such as heavy sagging in the neck and jawline. Incisions follow the hairline from the temple to the area around the ears. Patients can expect a recovery time of at least 2 weeks after the procedure.
The mid facelift is sometimes referred to as the vertical lift because muscles and tissue can be lifted vertically, through an incision inside the eyelid or near the temple. The mid facelift can be performed concurrent with a standard facelift if the area of the neck is also concerning to the patient.
